Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about hiFred.

General

What is hiFred?

hiFred is an AI copilot built for Product Managers. It works alongside you at every stage of the PM workflow — from discovery and spec writing to engineering handoff and team alignment — so you spend less time on coordination overhead and more time on strategy and users.

Who is hiFred for?

hiFred is built for the entire company — PMs are the main drivers, but every team benefits:

  • Product Managers — The core users. PMs use Fred to run discovery, write specs, manage handoffs, and keep every team aligned without chasing anyone.
  • Engineers — Enjoy a smooth handoff with zero ambiguity. Engineers can comment, give feedback, and ask questions directly on the spec — and Fred answers instantly, 24/7.
  • Marketing, Sales, Support, QA — Full visibility into what product and engineering are working on, what's coming next, and where things stand. No more "what are they building?" or "when is this shipping?" — everyone stays in sync automatically.
How is hiFred different from other AI writing tools?

Most AI tools start from a blank box and wait for instructions. Fred is different — it learns your product from the context you give it: your tickets, Figma designs, user research, team conversations, and past decisions. From that foundation, Fred helps you see angles you might have missed, surface overlooked options, and think more expansively. But every call is still yours. Fred opens up the space; you decide where to go.

Is hiFred like Cursor but for PMs?

Exactly how we describe it. Cursor works because it reads your entire codebase before suggesting a single line — so its output fits your actual code, not a generic project. hiFred works the same way for PMs: it reads your tickets, specs, designs, and past decisions, so everything it produces fits your actual product. No generic output, no rewriting from scratch.

How is hiFred different from just using Claude or ChatGPT?
  • Built for PMs, not general purpose. hiFred is designed around how PMs actually work. Tools like Claude or ChatGPT can technically be configured for PM work, but that means finding the right prompts, doing ongoing maintenance, and working around real structural limitations.
  • Shared context across your team. Your docs live locally in general-purpose tools and are hard to share. hiFred gives your whole team shared specs and team-wide context out of the box.
  • No configuration required. There's no way to give different departments or products their own distinct context in general AI tools. hiFred handles that automatically.
  • Model-agnostic. General-purpose AI tools can get expensive fast, and you're locked into one provider's pricing and roadmap. hiFred lets you use any LLM or bring your own API tokens — so you control your costs and are never locked into a single vendor.

How It Works

What can Fred actually do?

Fred helps across four key stages:

  • Discovery — Drop in interviews, support tickets, NPS data, churn reports, or raw notes. Fred surfaces recurring themes, ranks insights by impact, and drafts an opportunity brief.
  • Spec writing — Paste a Jira link or drop in Figma screens. Fred reads the ticket, comments, and designs, then drafts acceptance criteria, edge cases, and open questions.
  • Engineering handoff — Engineers ask questions directly in the ticket. Fred answers instantly from the spec, 24/7. Your Live Spec is also available inside Cursor so engineers never have to leave their editor.
  • Team alignment — Fred takes your Live Spec and generates tailored outputs for every team: a KB article for Support, test scenarios for QA, a GTM brief for Marketing, release notes for customers, and an executive summary for management.
Do I have to change the way I work?

No. hiFred layers on top of your existing tools — Jira, Notion, Linear, Figma, Slack, and more. There's no migration, no IT ticket, and no lengthy rollout. Just connect and go.

Does Fred make decisions for me?

No. You make every call. Fred handles the heavy lifting — drafting, summarizing, answering questions, catching gaps — but all decisions remain with you.

Can Fred help me track my competitors?

Yes. Fred includes a deep competitor analysis that runs on a regular cadence, automatically reviewing every key aspect of your competitive landscape. Fred suggests an initial list of competitors to watch, and you can refine it, add new ones, or remove irrelevant ones at any time.

This covers pricing changes, feature updates, product positioning, job postings, and release notes — the signals that actually matter for product strategy. The result is always-fresh competitive intel that informs your specs, prioritization, and positioning — without you having to manually track anything.

Live Specs

What is a Live Spec?

A Live Spec is a PRD that actually stays current. Traditional PRDs go stale the moment they're written — decisions get made in Slack and never captured, engineers find gaps mid-sprint, and no one trusts the doc by the end. A Live Spec evolves with every decision and conversation, lives inside the ticket workflow, and Fred keeps it updated so you don't have to.

How is a Live Spec different from a regular PRD?
Traditional PRD Live Spec
Outdated the moment it's saved Evolves with every decision and conversation
Gaps found by engineers mid-sprint Gaps caught before the sprint starts
PM becomes the bottleneck Fred answers engineering questions 24/7
Can engineers access the Live Spec?

Yes. Engineers can ask questions directly in the Jira ticket and Fred answers from the spec in real time. The Live Spec is also available inside Cursor, so engineers have everything they need without leaving their editor.

Integrations

What tools does hiFred integrate with?

hiFred works with: Jira, Confluence, Linear, Notion, Slack, and GitHub. Additional integrations are on the roadmap.

Do I need to migrate any data?

No. hiFred connects to the tools you already use. Nothing moves, nothing breaks.
